“The Scientific World View and Its Enemies”

Global Warming is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people.

Evolution and Darwinism are seriously flawed and thus alternatives must be taught in schools across the nation.

Humans walked with Dinosaurs.

“Alternative medicines” are scientifically sound, but scientific medicine is bogus.

Genetically engineered food will kill us.

Pharmaceutical companies have your best interests in mind.

Humans are born lazy, greedy, selfish and violent … so a powerful state, war, and market capitalism best fits our nature.

Evolutionary Psychology is good science.

There is such a thing as race, and some races are smarter than others.

Welcome to the ideologies of thousands of Americans in the 21st Century; the Age of Reason seems to have taken a wrong step somewhere, and filling the void are fundamentalist religions, New-Age healthcare, techno-phobia, governmental manipulation, and corporate capitalist greed. Science and the scientific method have been the first casualties in this new century, and each of us will be the second, third, and so forth.

On Equal Time for Freethought’s special fund drive program, we will first speak to Ann Druyan – widow of the late astronomer Carl Sagan – on the nature of science and what it has to offer humanity as we move further into the 21st century. We will entertain why spirituality is not lost to the scientific worldview. As a gift to donors during this program, we will have copies of the full ‘Cosmos’ television series on VHS.

Then, we will discuss what has happened regarding the multiple attacks on science with scientist and author Dr. Dan Agin. As a gift for donors we will be offering his new book, ‘Junk Science: An Overdue Indictment of Government, Industry, and Faith Groups that Twist Science for their own gain.’

“I worry that … pseudoscience and superstition will seem year by year more tempting, the siren song of unreason more sonorous and attractive. Where have we heard it before? Whenever our ethnic or national prejudices are aroused, in times of scarcity, during challenges to national self-esteem or nerve, when we agonize about our diminished cosmic place and purpose, or when fanaticism is bubbling up around us – then, habits of thought familiar from ages past reach for the controls. The candle flame gutters. Its little pool of light trembles. Darkness gathers. The demons begin to stir.” – Carl Sagan
